With over eight years experience in publishing as an editor I provide freelance editorial services for both publishers and individuals.
I’ve worked as an editor across a range of books from contemporary and historical adult romances, illustrated young-fiction, funny middle-grade, young adult and crossover fiction and non-fiction. For a full range of my experience and the books I’ve worked on, see my Reedsy page here. I have a wealth of experience, in particular, in reading and assessing manuscripts, providing structural editorial feedback and undertaking detailed line edits.
The services I offer are:
SUBMISSION REVIEW
Almost ready to send your work out to agents and need a second read through for feedback? With experience working in-house in editorial teams at the top publishers in the UK, and having had submitted to agents myself, I can give feedback on your covering letter, synopsis and sample chapters. I will provide comments in the documents and a report of 1000 words with feedback.
FULL MANUSCRIPT REPORT
Whether you’ve written the first draft, or you’ve self-edited your manuscript numerous times yourself, sometimes you need a second opinion to see whether your novel has potential. With this service I will read your full manuscript and provide you with a report that is at least 2000 words taking a look at your characters, plot, structure, language and style.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT
Similar to the full manuscript report, with the developmental edit I will be looking at the bigger picture of your novel, though this will be the kind of edit I do as an editor in-house. At this stage, I will not be reporting on whether I think your novel has potential, like with the full manuscript report, but instead will be identifying ways the story can be improved. I will write comments throughout the manuscript and provide you with an editorial letter that will be at least 2000 words, looking at character, plot, structure, language and style. Though, for this edit the focus will be on the structural bigger issues with your novel.
LINE EDIT
Once you are happy with the structure of your novel, you might be looking for someone to look at the granular details of your novel. In a line edit, I will be looking at your novel from a line by line level, and will use tracked changes to make edits that will improve the flow sentence by sentence. I will also flag any inconsistencies, and flag any plot and/or character issues in the text if they arise. This is usually the last stage of an edit before copy-editing, or if you are hoping to send your book out to agents it might be the final read before you send it off. Typically, I also provide a report alongside the line edit summarising the changes.
MENTORING
I take on a number of clients for mentoring with their work-in-progress novels, tailored to the individual and their aims for their writing. The mentoring can be short-term or long-term, and will involve me reading your work, with in-person (through Zoom) feedback. Each mentor I undertake has different needs and I can be flexible in making the mentorship be exactly what you require.
